To obey is better than sacrifice

1 Samuel 15:22
“But Samuel replied:
‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.’”

Prophet Samuel confronts King Saul after he disobeyed God’s command to completely destroy the Amalekites and their possessions. Saul had spared the king of the Amalekites and some of the best livestock, intending to offer them as sacrifices to God.

Samuel’s response emphasizes the importance of obedience over ritualistic acts or sacrifices. He reminds Saul that God values obedience and a heart that willingly follows His commands more than outward displays of religious devotion. True obedience involves not just following the letter of the law but also aligning one’s heart and actions with God’s will.

This verse as a reminder that obedience to God’s commands is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with Him. It highlights the significance of prioritizing obedience and heeding God’s instructions above our own desires or alternative forms of worship.
